Furniture PDPs that convert: where room preview belongs on the product page

Most furniture PDPs are built like apparel pages: gallery left, buy box right, done. That layout hides the one question your shopper is actually asking — will this piece work in my room? Room preview belongs on the PDP as a first-class action, not a footer link to a separate visualization site.

Put dimensions before romance

Shoppers who will use room preview still need width, depth, and height in centimetres or inches above the fold. Preview answers context; dimensions answer physics. If you bury measurements in a collapsed accordion, you will get previews followed by returns for “too wide for the alcove.”

Where the preview button should sit

  • Primary gallery zone — a “See in my room” chip under the main image stack performs best on mobile.
  • Buy box — secondary text link for shoppers who read specs first.
  • Sticky bar (mobile) — optional; only if it does not cover your size selector.

Do not open room preview in a new tab. Every tab switch on a £800 sofa PDP is a leak in the funnel.

What happens after click (set expectations)

Our flow: upload room photo → pick variant if applicable → composite in ~30 seconds. Tell shoppers that upfront. “Takes about 30 seconds” beats vague AI copy and reduces mid-generation abandonment.

Photography that feeds preview quality

Room preview composites from your existing catalog JPEGs. White-background hero shots work; cut-out PNGs with clean edges work better. If your only asset is a lifestyle crop with another sofa in frame, expect weaker placement — fix the asset, not the widget.

Measure on staging before launch

  1. Install the jsDelivr snippet on a staging product (five-minute setup on most themes).
  2. Run three room photos: small flat, open-plan, awkward corner.
  3. Track preview-to-add-to-cart on that SKU for two weeks before rolling site-wide.
